Foreign Languages - Spanish

Charles Darwin Community Primary School

Foreign Languages Overview

Our intent

When studying Spanish at Charles Darwin pupils will:

  • Develop a bank of everyday Spanish vocabulary
  • Follow simple classroom instructions in Spanish
  • Listen and respond to conversations in Spanish
  • Read and write in Spanish
  • Develop an understanding of some aspects of culture in Spanish speaking countries
  • Develop the foundations for further learning

What this looks like at Charles Darwin

Our Spanish curriculum is designed around topics which are of use to everyday life in a Spanish speaking country.  The curriculum begins by introducing Key Stage 2 children to the spoken language and builds towards writing texts which give opinion and contain a variety of tenses and conjunctions. The curriculum builds in opportunities for children to gain an understanding of festivals and celebrations in other cultures and to listen to stories, songs, poems and rhymes in Spanish thus adding to their cultural capital.

Lessons are planned and organised to allow children to work independently, in pairs, as part of a small group or as a whole class and music is often used to aid learning and retention of knowledge.  Pupils are taught basic grammar including feminine and masculine forms, the conjugation of high-frequency verbs and Spanish sentence structure.

Differentiation

All children should be integrated as fully as possible into all aspects of the Foreign Languages curriculum. Differentiation by task, support and outcome will allow all children to improve their confidence and self-esteem, as well as meeting the individual needs of the class. When planning group work, it is important to incorporate some activities in which mixed ability groups can be used. In doing so, children will be able to consolidate their skills by demonstrating what they are capable of to others and will be able to observe good practice from their peers.

Progression

Progression in Spanish will be assessed through learning walks, listening to children’s responses and contributions to discussions and evaluating their written work.

Progress will be recorded by tracking attainment of KPIs in each topic area.

Impact

Charles Darwin children tell us they love their Spanish lessons where as well as learning the basics of the language they enjoy finding out about the country itself. Our children will recognise and apply key Spanish vocabulary verbally and in written form. They will be able to write a limited amount of Spanish.
