Year 5 2025 - 2026
Mr Solan
Dr Holmes
Welcome to all of our Year 5 children!
Curriculum
In the morning, we have maths, English, spelling and guided reading. In the afternoon, Science, RE, music, computing, PE, history and geography are taught. Each class also has Spanish lessons with Mrs Ireland and Art with Mrs Cowburn. The classes will be assisted by Mrs Thompson
In English, we will be reading Queen of the Falls.
Our Reading text is GoodNIght Stories for Rebel Girls.
In Maths, we will be focussing on place value.
Our History topic is the WW2 and our Geography topic is all about the importance of trees.
We also have a workshop to start the year, all about WW2.
Reading
In Year 5, we love reading! We know that life can get busy but your child will really benefit from regular time reading with an adult at home. Please log your reading on BoomReader, which will be checked weekly.
You will need two books - One that you can read confidently to an adult at home and in school, as well as another of your choice!
PE
Children need to ensure that they come to school in PE kit on the days that we have PE. Full participation is required for PE unless a medical note has been given.
PE sessions will be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons this term.
We ask that long hair is tied back and no jewellery is worn for safety reasons.
Times tables at home
This term the focus of our homework is times tables - essential to our success in Year 5. Please make sure that your child practises regularly. All children have a Ttrockstars login which they will have used previously. Please ask us if you need a reminder of your child's login. There are lots of ways to help at home: quizzes with you, online games, family competitions, times table card games and songs to name a few. Rapid recall of tables will reap great rewards in your child's maths work.
Spellings
We are starting a new spelling scheme called Spelling Shed. Children will have lessons in school and can access games linked to their learning online. We will send home logins for this. We will also be sending home weekly homework linked to each week’s learning. There is no need to return it to school (though children are very welcome to show us if they wish!) but completing it will help consolidate their learning.
Your support and encouragement is greatly appreciated and will contribute significantly to your child’s progress through school. As always, do contact us with any concerns or queries. Our email address is y5@charlesdarwin.cheshire.sch.uk
