Year 5 2019 - 2020
Welcome to Year 5,
We are looking forward to another excellent year at Charles Darwin full of exciting opportunities.
In the morning, Maths and English are taught by Mrs Mowat and Mrs Harley. The topics covered are exactly the same in both classes. In the afternoon, classes will be taught Science, ICT, P.E. and topic work by Mrs Mowat and Mrs Bennett. Each class will also have Spanish lessons with Señora Fordham and R.E. lessons with Miss Railton. The classes will be assisted by Mrs Smithies, Mrs Thompson and Miss Jones.
Year 5 get the wonderful chance to learn how to play the recorder. Each child will be loaned a recorder from school and your child will need to bring it in each Thursday for the lesson. You’ll be able to listen to your child’s progress as they will need to practise at home each week!
In Year 5, we love reading! We will begin the year by ensuring that each child is still in the habit of reading at home at least three times a week. We know that life can get busy but your child will really benefit from regular time reading with an adult at home. The class teachers check reading diaries each week…and there are prizes!
Children need to ensure they have the full kit. They need to have two kits: an indoor kit, consisting of a t-shirt, shorts and pumps and an outdoor kit, consisting of a tracksuit and trainers. Full participation is required for PE unless a medical note has been given. PE sessions will be on Monday and Friday afternoons this term.
This term we would like the focus of our homework is times tables - essential to our success in Year 5. Please make sure that your child practises regularly. There are lots of ways to have a go at home: quizes with you, online games, family competitions, times table card games and songs to name a few. Rapid recall of tables will reap great rewards in your child's maths work.
We have planned some exciting trips for this school year. We will send you the information for these nearer to the time.
Your support and encouragement is greatly appreciated and will contribute significantly to your child’s progress through school. As always, do contact us with any concerns or queries.
