Phonics and Reading

Phonics and Reading

In Reception we start every day with our Alphabet Aerobics, which helps children to remember the sound that individual letters (graphemes) make, using an action and picture clue to help. When the children are confident with the action and picture clue, we take the picture prompt away!

Alphabet Aerobics with phase 3 digraphs.

We also follow the Letters and Sounds programme.

“Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven. “

When the children become familiar with the letter sounds they begin to blend letters together to read words.

By the end of Reception we aim to get to the end of Phase 4.

You can get information on this method of teaching phonics on the following website
